It's quite easy to prattle off what we might consider classic novels - Pride and Prejudice, The Great Gatsby, My Brilliant Career for example, (but of course create your own list).
But do we consider those books we read as children (or read to our children) to be part of this list or do they have their own list perhaps?
I ask because the 1963 picture book, Where the Wild Things Are, is being made into a movie.
And described as a coup, it was announced today that the feature film is to be shot in Melbourne and regional Victoria.
Spike Jonze is set to direct, Tom Hanks to produce and Michelle Williams and Benicio Del Toro are down to voice a couple of the characters.
Pre-production begins this year, with the finished product expected in mid 2008.
In answer to my own question, I guess a children's book can be considered a classic when as a child it captured our imagination so much that it is fondly remembered well into our adult years.
So if they get this movie really wrong, I imagine they're going to have quite a few unhappy adults to deal with.

The multi-million dollar feature film Where the Wild Things Are is to be shot in Melbourne in a major boost for the state's film production industry.
Directed by Oscar-nominated Spike Jonze and featuring the voices of Hollywood stars Benicio Del Toro and Michelle Williams, the shoot will take place on use two sound stages at Melbourne Central City studios in the Docklands and at locations in regional Victoria.
Announcing the coup at Federation Squaretoday, Victorian Treasurer John Brumby said the film was expected to bring up to $30 million to the state.

- MOVIE version of a much-loved children’s book is being filmed around Gembrook.
A tight veil of secrecy has been placed on the shooting of Maurice Sendack’s classic Where the Wild Things Are, but cast and crew are expected to be in the area for several days.
Filming took place at a number of locations last week including Gilwell Park in the Dandenong Ranges.
The movie is being directed by Spike Jonze and produced by Tom Hanks and Maurice Sendak.
Stars include Catherine Keener, Benicio Del Toro, Forest Whitaker and Michelle Williams.
The movie is expected to combine live action and computer-generated images with a likely G rating.
Gembrook Supermarket attendant Amanda Collins said there was a buzz around town that had been generating a few whispers between customers.
“There have been a lot of new faces through the supermarket but I couldn’t say for sure that they are from the film,” she said.
She said someone had bought two crates of milk last week that she believed was for people working on the children’s movie.
“Some people are excited but some people are a little bit annoyed about it all.”
Ms Collins said film production had resulted in several roads being blocked around town which was requiring people to use different routes to work.

Where the Wild Things Are’ Script Reviewed - Citation :
- Spike Jonze’s
live action adaptation of Maurice Sendak’s children’s book for the ages, Where the Wild Things Are, finished shooting in December of last year, but details on the production have been kept tight to the vest. MTV posted the first still (above) online back in June, but that’s just about all there’s been to consume. Last week, The New York Post’s Vulture blog learned that author Dave Eggers, who co-wrote the screenplay with Jonze, will be releasing an adult novel based on Wild Things, and the release would coincide with the film’s debut in October of 2008. Now they’ve copped a version of the script written in October of 2005, and have posted a review. Bottom line is that Eggers penchant for nailing “the excitement, small joys, and great disappointments of childhood,” in tandem with Jonze’s well established eye for absurd, visual decadence could cook up something that rivals the impact of its source material. Here’s an excerpt from their review: <BLOCKQUOTE> - Citation :
-
<BLOCKQUOTE>Max, the hero of Wild Things, is now an 8-year-old with an absent father, an older sister who’s drifting away from him, a mother whose personal and job concerns leave her little time or energy for the rambunctious boy she dearly loves. Eggers and Jonze — mostly, we suspect, Eggers — touchingly sketch this troubled family unit and carefully track the rising frustration and alarm Max feels as his world becomes darker and more unhappy, until, on page 21, he runs away, climbs aboard a boat, and sails to the island of the Wild Things.
There Jonze’s influence begins to be felt, as the enormous creatures — with names like Carol, Alexander, and K.W. — look to Max as their King, and in a series of marvelous adventures, wrestle tornadoes, eat mud, and tame hawks. Always, though, there’s a subtle undercurrent of menace, and it becomes clear that while spinning a yarn, Jonze and Eggers are also taking us on a tour of Max’s psyche, as he works out so many of the issues that plague his young life.</BLOCKQUOTE> - Citation :
- A mix of live action, “Big Bird sized” monster costumes, and CGI - Wild Things employs the vocal talents of Forest Whitaker, James Gandolfini, Michelle Williams, and Catherine O’Hara, and also featuers Catherine Keener, as Max’s mom on-screen. A heretofore unknown, Max Records (seriously?), was cast as Max, the fictional.
Previously: Katherine O’Hara talked about voice work for the film and iChatting with Maurice Sendak. Also, an on-location report from Melbourne.

- Lauren Ambrose Replaces Michelle Williams in Where the Wild Things Are
Lauren Ambrose has signed on to voice one of the title roles in Spike Jonze’s big screen adaptation of Maurice Sendak’s classic children’s fantasy book Where the Wild Things Are.
